Coffee grinder 3.0 for Peugeot

Coffee grinder 3.0 for Peugeot

You’re undoubtedly all familiar with Peugeot’s ‘Nostalgie’ grinder created by the world-famous Peugeot brothers in 1840. It was the first ‘square’ grinder (first coffee, then pepper in 1870) that became a worldwide icon. We challenged this iconic signature design in 2008, when creating a pepper mill for France’s spice master, Olivier Roellinger. Today, the Roellinger mill is exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York and continues to be a product image that sells well.

Four years ago, I went to see the Peugeot team and offered to redesign their original 1840’s ‘square’ coffee grinder. Following the advent of coffee’s 4th wave, the time had come to keep pace with baristas and slow coffee from New Zealand and Australia. Once we had brought the right people together around the table, including a coffee expert, we were well on the road to developing a new design and new grinder. The Coffee 3.0 holds its own alongside the 1840’s grinder. We put our thinking caps on to review the traditional mechanism.
And here it is, in February 2019: our studio has designed a new coffee grinder for Peugeot, in collaboration with Parisian coffee roaster, Hippolyte Courty (l’Arbre à Café), who, amongst other things has developed a French art of coffee, for the nation’s top Michelin starred restaurants. Thanks to the expertise of Peugeot and l’Arbre à Café, we were able to design a new grinder that caters to both the new requirements of coffee drinkers and hot drink trends. This new manual grinder has a number of different settings to cater to contemporary needs to produce espressos as well as slow coffees (slow infusion) and the V60 (slow filtration), aeropress, chemex or cold infusion. Maybe that gives you an insight into the complexities we faced when designing this grinder and the need to combine ease of handling, ergonomics, practicality, cleaning, dosing, etc… to ensure it met the needs of baristas (professional coffee makers) and coffee enthusiasts. A beautiful and tasteful object!
The first boxed sets will go on sale in April so order one from your reseller now!
